Frequently Asked Sedation Dentistry Questions
How Is Sedation Done?
You are given a small pill to take prior to your dental appointment.
Your friend or family member companion will accompany you to the office.
By the time you arrive, you will be relaxed and drowsy.
When you arrive in our office, you will be escorted to one of our
comfortable rooms, covered with a warm blanket and placed on a monitor
to watch your vital signs. You will be given additional sedation
medications as needed. After you are comfortable, Dr. VanderMolen and
his experienced dental team at Advanced Dental Care of Springfield will
take care of your dental needs.
When your treatment is completed, your companion will return you home
to finish your comfortable, relaxing day.
What Does It Feel Like To Be Sedated For Dental Treatment?
You will be relaxed and “removed” from what is going on. You will
“float” through the treatment time in complete comfort, unaware of the
dental treatment being completed while you rest.
What Will I Feel Like After My Sedation Visit?
Some people feel sleepy and nap when they get home. Most people report
little or no memory of dental treatment after it is complete which makes
for an even more overall positive experience. Also, perhaps because
sedated patients are so relaxed, they have limited or no discomfort in
the days following their treatment.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?
Sedation dentistry, performed under the supervision of specially-trained
dentists, has an admirable safety record. While any treatment has potential
risks and benefits, the risks of properly administered sedation are quite low.
The fewer medications that are used, the safer the treatment tends to be. Our
office features a simple and uncomplicated sedation program. For extra safety,
“reversing agents” are available that can counteract the sedation medications
within a few minutes.
What Special Training Is Required To Do Sedation Dentistry?
The American Dental Association requires the completion of a rigorous 60 hour
course of study. There are stringent requirements for the course content,
including extensive practical experience sedating patients and extensive “classroom”
instruction. Dr. VanderMolen is a graduate of the 80-hour program at the UCLA School
of Dentistry under the direction of Dr. John Yagiela who is one of the nation’s
leading experts on dental sedation and anesthesia. Dr. VanderMolen is also
certified in advanced cardiac life support. Comparatively, few general
dentists, have fulfilled these requirements, so relatively few dentists can
provide sedation to their patients. It was important to Dr. VanderMolen to
invest the time and make the commitment to make sedation dentistry available
in the Springfield area.
Can I Have Sedation Dentistry In Your Office If I Have My Own “Regular Dentist?”
Of course you can. Many area dentists refer their patients who could benefit
from sedation to our office. Dr. VanderMolen would be happy to provide you with
a comprehensive examination to determine your treatment needs, and determine if
you are a candidate for sedation dentistry.
