Close up of smiling mouthYou may not pay much attention to your tooth enamel, but this coating plays the extremely important role of protecting your teeth throughout your day. Unfortunately, enamel erosion has become increasing prevalent — and is irreversible. Maintaining a strong oral hygiene routine at home can help protect your enamel, but don’t forget to attend a dental checkup in Springfield for some extra help. In this post, your dentist will explain the importance of enamel and how to take proper care of it.

What is Tooth Enamel?

Enamel is the thin outer-shell that covers your tooth’s crown — and it’s actually the hardest tissue in your body! It is made up mostly of minerals and varies in color. Enamel protects your teeth during their daily uses, including chewing, biting and grinding. It also protects your teeth from painful temperatures, chemicals and plaque.

What Harms Tooth Enamel?

There are no living cells present in enamel, so if it chips or cracks it cannot be repaired. There are a number of environmental, dietary and medical reasons for tooth erosion, including:

  • Excessive consumption of soft drinks, juices, sugars and starches
  • Dry mouth
  • Acid reflux, frequent vomiting and other gastrointestinal problems
  • Brushing your teeth too hard
  • Biting on hard objects
  • Friction from grinding your teeth
  • Fractured teeth
  • Chewing tobacco

How Can I Care for My Enamel?

When your enamel erodes, it makes your teeth more vulnerable to cavities and tooth decay. To keep your mouth healthy, follow these simple steps:

  • Limit your intake of highly acidic foods and drinks. Rinse your mouth immediately after consuming them or use a straw to protect your teeth.
  • Avoid snacking throughout the day, especially on foods high in sugar and starches. If possible, rinse your mouth and brush your teeth after snacking
  • Drink more water and chew sugar-free gum between meals to boost saliva flow
  • Use fluoride toothpaste
  • Visit your dentist at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings

While it’s important to keep up a healthy oral hygiene routine at home, don’t forget to visit your dentist in Springfield for regular checkups. Your practitioner can spot the early signs of enamel erosion, offer cleaning tips and help you keep your teeth healthy.
